Copper Country's Gateway: The Portage Lake Lift Bridge
An Engineering Marvel in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge stands as a testament to engineering marvel and community spirit. This iconic structure, also known as the Houghton–Hancock Bridge, serves as a vital link between the cities of Houghton and Hancock, bridging the waters of Portage Lake and the Keweenaw Waterway.
A Glimpse into History
The Portage Lake Lift Bridge, completed in 1959, replaced an older swing bridge that had become a navigation hazard. Designed by the Chicago engineering firm Hazelet and Erdal, and constructed with over 35,000 tons of concrete and 7,000 tons of steel, it was the world's heaviest and widest double-decked vertical-lift bridge at the time. This impressive structure can raise its middle section from a clearance of four feet to 100 feet, allowing boats to pass underneath.
The original bridge on this site was a wooden swing bridge built in 1875 by James P. Edward of Fox and Howard Inc. of Chicago. This bridge was replaced in 1895 by a steel swing bridge constructed by the King Bridge Company. However, the steel swing bridge faced challenges, including a collision with the ship Northern Wave in 1905. The current lift bridge, built in 1959, was a significant upgrade, costing about $11-13 million.
In June 2022, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, recognizing its engineering significance and historical importance.
A Symbol of Connection
My photograph of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, taken on a gray and cloudy late summer day, captures the bridge's stoic beauty and enduring presence. Now transformed into a 1000-piece puzzle by MI Puzzles, a creation of Phil Stagg Photography, this image invites people to connect not only with the bridge's history but also with each other. Assembling the puzzle becomes a shared experience, fostering moments of togetherness and collaboration.
Celebrating Community
The bridge is more than just a piece of infrastructure; it is a symbol of unity for the local communities. Every year, Houghton and Hancock celebrate Bridgefest, an event that commemorates the bridge's role in bringing the two cities closer together. This celebration highlights the bridge's significance in the daily lives of residents and its role in the region's history.
